YMCA: Young Men's Christian Association
YMCA stands for Young Men’s Christian Association. It is a worldwide youth organization based in Geneva, Switzerland, with more than 64 million beneficiaries in 120 countries.
It was founded on 6 June 1844 by Sir George Williams in London, United Kindom originally as the Young Men’s Christian Association, and aims to put Christian principles into practice by developing a healthy “body, mind, and spirit”.
At first, the organization provided beds and shelter to young men leaving the countryside for work in the cities.
YMCA globally operates on a federation model, with each independent local YMCA voluntarily affiliated to their national organizations. The national organizations, in turn, are part of both an Area Alliance (Europe, Asia Pacific, Middle East, Africa, Latin America & Caribbean, United States, and Canada) and the World Alliance of YMCAs, World YMCA
