(1) XPS: X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy
XPS stands for X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) is a surface-sensitive quantitative spectroscopic technique based on the photoelectric effect that can identify the elements that exist within a material (elemental composition) or are covering its surface, as well as their chemical state, and the overall electronic structure and density of the electronic states in the material.
XPS is a powerful measurement technique because it not only shows what elements are present, but also what other elements they are bonded to.
It is often applied to study chemical processes in the materials in their as-received state or after cleavage, scraping, exposure to heat, reactive gasses or solutions, ultraviolet light, or during ion implantation.
(2) XPS:XML Paper Specification
XPS stands for XML Paper Specification.It is used in print processing layout display creation of document by incorporating vector graphic images and allow to save files as XPS document. It is an alternative of a PDF file.
It was first introduced with Windows Vista as an inbuilt application in Year 2006. It was continued in the next version of Microsoft Windows 7 too. But later in Year 2009 XPS was replaced by OXPS (OpenXPS). OXPS was based on XAML and started supporting many features like: Digital Signature and Digital Rights Managements.
XPS files can be recognized by their .xps extension. XPS file is a zipped archive file with collection of XML files having text messages, embedded fonts, images, digital signatures, and DRM etc. The zipped packing process to create OXPS is also called Open Packaging Conventions.
