National Salt Satyagraha Memorial
National Salt Satyagraha Memorial
Visiting places of utmost National and historical importance is a privilege that few possess. We were very delighted to visit the unique historical place, National Salt Satyagraha Memorial, which was inaugurated by Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, on 30th Jan 2019, and kept open for the public.
The ‘National Salt Satyagraha Memorial’ aims to serve as a reminder of the great sacrifices made by the people of the nation for the cause of freedom.
It is a tribute to the 80 Satyagrahis led by Mahatma Gandhi, who had marched with him in the Dandi Salt Satyagraha during the days of India’s struggle for freedom. In short…Wonderful concept, great layout, and very informative
History: On March 12, 1930, Mahatma Gandhi commenced a leading-edge journey called the Salt March from Sabarmati Ashram, Ahmedabad in the state of Gujarat to the village of Dandi in Navsari on foot, in the state’s coastal area and broke down the Salt Law imposed by the British Govt. The Salt March began on March 12, 1930 and ended on April 6, 1930.
It was a 24 days Salt March, which was non-violent in nature & demonstrated the effectiveness of non-violent civil disobedience as a form of protest for the first time.
The ‘National Salt Satyagraha Memorial’ has also 24-narrative murals depicting various events and stories from the historic 1930 Salt March”
As per official website ( www.dandimemorial.in) , Right from the time when the Prime Minister of India Mr. Narendra Modi approved the Dandi Memorial Project in 2005, a large number of people from all walks of life abide whole hearted passion, hard work and dedication to make this project a reality. A High Level Dandi Memorial Committee (HLDMC) was constituted under the leadership of Mr. Gopal Krishna Gandhi, grandson of the Mahatma Gandhi to oversee the project”.
IIT Bombay was later assigned the task of conceptual design, coordination and implementation of the project.
40 Solar trees are installed to fulfill the energy needs of the memorial complex. This makes this memorial a net zero-energy project. The energy produced throughout the day is exported to the electricity grid and during the night, the energy needed is imported back from the grid.
