What is the full form of DGP

DGP: Director General of Police

DGP stands for Director General of Police. In India, the Director General of Police (abbr. DGP) is the head of the Police Department of a particular state or Union Territory in India.

DGP typically heads the state or UT police force, who in case, are also called State Police Chief. DGP is appointed by the Cabinet from the Indian Police Service and they hold a three-star rank.

This post is selected by the Cabinet. Apart from the State Chief, there may be other police officials heading other high profile departments such as Anti-Corruption Bureau, Director of Vigilance, State Prisons Head,  Criminal Investigation Department (CID), etc.

He also heads other reputed departments such as Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel National Police Academy (SVPNPA), Central Reserve Police Forces (CRPF), etc.
