CAG: Comptroller and Auditor General of India
CAG stands for Comptroller and Auditor General of India. CAG of India is an authority, established by Article 148 of the Constitution of India, which audits all receipts and expenditure of the Government of India and the state governments.
The CAG is ranked 9th and enjoys the same status as a judge of Supreme Court of India in Indian order of precedence.
CAG is also the head of the Indian Audit and Accounts Department. It is one of the most powerful bodies to investigate financial frauds in India such as coal mine allocation scam and 2G spectrum allocation scam.
Duties of the CAG
- To audit the receipts and the expenditure from the Consolidated Fund of India and of the State and Union Territory those have a legislative assembly
- Audits the government companies
- Auditing the expenditures from the contingency Fund and public accounts of the Center and the States.
- To submit audit reports of the accounts of the centre to the President
- To submit audit reports of the accounts of the state to the Governor
